Slackin' Church

After the C4TK Bay Area hackthon this weekend, there was strong demand for this service. Self-service signup/SaaS model is on the product roadmap.

For now, if you're interested, please reach out to hello@slackin.church to get set up manually for your church community on Slack.

Features

  • Look up any single Bible passage, or multiple passages, using bible: John 3:16; Genesis 1:1` (separate with semi-colons)
    • Intelligently parses Bible verses using common abbreviations so that bible: 1 Cor 13:4-7 also works.
  • Participate in collaborative Bible studies.
  • Churches can offer Bible-in-Slack to read Scripture together during the sermon portion of a worship service. When the pastor says, "Turn with me to BOOK CHAPTER:VERSE," one person types it in, and the whole congregation is already there. Finally, a Bible lookup that is faster than a physical Bible and any app out there (today, I still flip through my Bible to a particular passage than I can with the YouVersion Bible app).
  • Get daily reminders to pray for a different country or region of the world, content from Operation World's prayer calendar.
  • Get your daily Scripture reading done right in Slack. Currently set up with Back to the Bible's 365 chronological reading plan -- with more reading plans to come.
  • Share prayer requests, manage and keep track of prayer requests for your small group or accountability groups right in Slack.

pray4me: For boldness in sharing the gospel to my unbelieving family members.
pray4: @jontsai @marc @chris.armas - pulls up individual prayer requests, or prompts them to share one if they haven't, yet.
  • Look up the weather anywhere, any time, right in Slack. weather: San Francisco, CA
  • See all available commands via htk: help

Setup Instructions

Setup should take anywhere from 5-10 minutes. You or a Slack administrator for your team will need to do the following:
  1. Add two webhook integrations in Slack (screenshot), Incoming WebHooks and Outgoing WebHooks, and configure them as in the following steps.

  2. Configure the Incoming WebHook (screenshot)
This allows Slackin' Church to send data and post messages into your team's Slack.
    • You can pick any channel to post to; in the demo we use #test but it doesn't really matter.
    • Name the bot something like "Hacktoolkit Bot", and upload the Hacktoolkit logo that you can grab here, or pick an icon emoji of your choice.
    • Save the randomly generated Webhook URL and send it to us so that we can configure your Slackin Church app plugin. Important! Do not share this token with anyone else. If it ever gets compromised, you will need to regenerate another one.

  3. Configure the Outgoing WebHook (screenshot)
This allows your team's Slack to send special commands to Slackin' Church.
    • Add the trigger words (special commands) for Slackin' Church to process:

      htk:,bible:,pray4me:,pray4:,weather:,

Note: trigger words may get added over time, so we'll be in touch if you ever need to update the integration.
    • Set the outgoing URL to: http://slackin.church/api/webhooks/slack
    • Save the randomly generated Token and send it to us so that we can configure your Slackin Church app plugin. Important! Do not share this token with anyone else. If it ever gets compromised, you will need to regenerate another one.
    • Name the bot something like "Hacktoolkit Bot", and upload the Hacktoolkit logo that you can grab here, or pick an icon emoji of your choice.

  4. Additionally, for best experience, create the Slack channels:
    #prayer-requests
    #prayer-closet
    #bible-one-year
    #operation-world
  5. You should be all set! Email hello@slackin.church if you run into any difficulties.
